In this post I will discuss about What is Comedy of manners.
In comedy of manners, human manners and behaviours are satirised. This form of comedy has its main subject and themes as the behaviour and deportment of men and women living under certain
social course. It seems to be preoccupied with the code of middle and upper class people. English Restoration comedies are better examples of comedy of manners.
In fact, drama is a form of literature that imitates life through speech and action. This form of literature is designed for
performance on the stage or in the theatre. That is actors and actresses act the parts of the characters and perform the indicated action. This dramatic form of literature is also called a play. Drama may be of different forms such as tragedy, comedy, tragi- comedy, classical tragedy, romantic tragedy, revenge tragedy, sentimental tragedy, heroic tragedy, melodrama, classical comedy, romantic comedy, comedy of humour, comedy of manners and so on.
Examples of drama include Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Man and Superman by George Bernard Shaw, The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd etc. In reading a play from the past such as King Oedipus or Hamlet, it will help us to know some of the conventions of the classical Greek theaters or Elizabethan theater. We watch them to satisfy our curiosity. They compel our attention. "Good drama"
said, critic George Jean Nathan, "is anything that interests an intelligently emotional group of persons assembled together in an illuminated hall."
